Gearboxes are mechanical devices used to increase output torque and reduce the speed, or RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) of a motor.
The shaft of the motor is connected to the gearbox at one end and through the internal arrangement of gears in the gearbox, a desired output torque and speed is obtained.
Depending on the application, gearboxes usually come in the following types: Bevel gearboxes, Spur gearboxes, helical gearboxes, worm gearboxes and planetary gearboxes.
Spur gearboxes are the most common and simplest to manufacture, but are suitable only for low torque or speed as a lot of unnecessary noise is created at high torque. Excessive force on the straight teeth of the spur gears can also destroy the gears over time. On the other hand, worm gearboxes are most suitable for braking or applications where extremely large gear reductions and torque are needed. They generate low noise, but also much power loss as efficiency can range only around 65%.
Gear motors are motors which come with gear assembly attached. This gear assembly increases torque and decreases speed.
SLS provides both gearboxes and gear motors from brands like Elecon, Radicon, Falk and Teco. Our gear drives are suitable for a variety of applications such as conveyor systems, mining, material handling, aggregates, cement, food industry and power generation.
